ABOUT
My topic deals with sports, more specifically the construction of stadiums, and how they impact the economy of the area surrounding them. It is undeniable that sports are significant, both in the United States and globally, as thirty-eight franchises in the world are worth over $1 billion (Forbes).
The impact professional sports teams have extends well beyond fans; they also affect the economy of their respective cities, although how teams specifically do so is blurry and up for debate. Understanding the aspects of this issue is vital before we can develop opinions about American sports and place values on local teams.
The primary reason that this topic is so important is that the building of stadiums, and sports in general, has a tremendous effect on the public. The impact of stadiums can be positive in that they provide happiness to the public, as well as new jobs. Stadiums also have the potential to boost the economy of the surrounding region. However, in some cases the construction of stadiums can have a negative impact. Sometimes, stadiums simply take away money from other businesses within its proximity, rather than inserting money into the economy.
Given the many discussions about this topic, there are different viewpoints regarding the matter. Some economists believe that the addition of new stadiums benefits the area to the point of an economic boom. Others think that new arenas actually hurt the economy, to the point where the citizens are losing money. Ultimately, the debate that surrounds the construction of stadiums is incredibly important, as its results will establish whether they help or hurt the economy, effectively determining if new arenas will be built in the future.
